Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, Denver Mountain Parks, and Open Space

Weekends only - Sat. 11-3; Sun. 1-5

Foothills Art Center

Friends of Red Rocks, in partnership with Foothills Art Center, is hosting a showcase for local visual artists to display their interpretation of the Magic of Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, Denver Mountain Parks and Open Space.  Schools from across the entire Denver Metro area, representing the entire range from preschool to college, have joined together to present this exhibit.  Several local professional artists, active and historical, will also be involved in providing this “Pre to Pro Interpretation” - a multi-generational view of a common theme.

There will be special exhibitions of works by Colorado’s own Vance Kirkland and pieces on loan from local historical archives.  It will be like walking though a time tunnel seeing this broad mix of skill and experience in the same place all focusing on the same theme.  The partnership with the educational organizations will also help to promote, preserve and celebrate the value of art in education and family life.

The Press Release - 3.24.04

Friends of Red Rocks (FORR), is presenting “PRESERVE THE MAGIC” an art exhibit at Foothills Art Center each weekend beginning April 25 and running through May 23, 2004.  This art exhibit is based on a “Pre to Pro” interpretation of Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre as well as other Colorado open spaces.  It will feature a multi-generational group of artists ranging from preschool age to the seasoned professional.  Highlights of the exhibit will be original works of art created by renowned Colorado artist Vance Kirkland and black and white landscape photographs by regional photographer Gifford Ewing.  The art show will also include some historical exhibits of Red Rocks on loan from the city of Denver and photographs from the initial construction of the amphitheatre by the Civilian Conservation Corps.  A silent auction of art as well as tickets to selected Red Rocks concerts and events will be held throughout the showing to benefit ongoing projects of the Friends of Red Rocks.

This art exhibit and other events throughout the year are for the purpose of increasing public awareness on issues that confront Red Rocks, encouraging volunteerism in the stewardship of this magical place, and raising money for FORR to assist in the preservation, enhancement, and maintenance of a treasured national landmark.

Friends of Red Rocks is a non-profit organization focussed on preserving and celebrating the magic of Red Rocks.  Its stewardship efforts include trail cleanups, which are conducted the last Saturday of every month, and a variety of maintenance and renovation projects.  Our celebrations include a series of events spotlighting local musical and visual arts.

Friends of Red Rocks

Friends of Red Rocks (FoRR) began in 1999 by exerting a powerful and influential voice in the city's plan to renovate the Amphitheatre. Its voice, urging preservation of the natural beauty of the Amphitheatre, is evident today whenever someone stands in the Amphitheatre. The new enhancements and improvements are safely tucked away underneath the broad, open plaza, and the natural ‘Magic of the Amphitheatre’ has been untouched.

Since then, Friends of Red Rocks has continued its preservation efforts through regular, year-round, monthly projects conducted at Red Rocks Park.

Recently, Friends of Red Rocks has partnered with several local music artists and hosted a series of free concerts at the Park featuring local musical groups. The strong, favorable reaction of those in attendance at those events has invigorated FoRR to not only plan a new series of concerts for 2004, but to look at other local artists who would enjoy celebrating the Magic of Red Rocks.

Why Art?

In 2004, Friends of Red Rocks committed to hosting a showcase for local visual artists to display their interpretation of the Magic of Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, Denver Mountain Parks and Open Space. Several local educational organizations quickly agreed to partner with FoRR to provide this wide breadth of students from elementary schools to college to display their art works. The partnership with the educational organizations will help to preserve the value of art in education and will be celebrated at the Preserve the Magic Art exhibit.
