The Amphitheater is but one part of the 640 acre Red Rocks Park, a very special geological/ecological niche that marks the point where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains. Known as a transition zone, the entire Park is especially rich in plant and animal life and it provides a window into the ancient geologic forces which created the Park's amazing rock formations The Master Plan recognized that the Park's potential as a 'natural learning classroom' is largely untapped and FORR hopes to change this. A wonderful, but little known, 'nature trail' begins at the Trading Post. Built several years ago with Volunteers of Outdoor Colorado support, the trail offers an intimate way to experience the rocks, plants and animals that inhabit the Park. Natural history walks, variously focusing on the geology, birds, plants, reptiles, mammals, insects, etc. are being planned. The Park also offers many other recreational opportunities--running, picnicking, hiking, bicycling, geological studies, sightseeing --and FORR members are working to make contributions as diverse as organizing Park clean-ups to working with Parks and Recreation to develop a Red Rocks Visitor's Map. |
